Since our conception in 1973, Action Cancer has lobbied the government to develop legislation and public policy that encourages the people of Northern Ireland to be pro-active about their own health. Past lobbying work includes:
Bowel Cancer Screening
In 2006 Action Cancer campaigned to bring bowel cancer screening to Northern Ireland by 2010. We organised a one-day conference for policy makers, clinicians and all those with an interest in bowel cancer screening to come together and to move the issue forward. In 2010 the bowel screening service was launched in Northern Ireland.
No Smoking in Cars Ban
In 2010 Action Cancer carried out research to highlight the public support for a campaign calling on local politicians to introduce a smoking ban in cars carrying children under the age of 16. The survey found that almost nine out of every ten homes across Northern Ireland would welcome the proposed ban. The proposed legislation is currently being considered by the government.
