Health Promotion in Schools
'Health Action Schools’ Programme
The Health Action Schools' Programme, supported by Centra & SuperValu, is designed to improve knowledge of health and to encourage pupils to take ownership of their lifestyle choices. Since 2003, our Health Action Programmes have worked with nearly 500,000 pupils across Northern Ireland.
The programme options offered are:
Health Action Heroes: Nursery School - Primary 3
This fun and activity based programme is based around our newly designed interactive story book ‘Health Action Heroes Quest to Save the Magical Kingdom’. The programme introduces pupils to the ‘4 Golden Rules’ for staying healthy. It encourages them to be physically active, working together as a team to complete 4 challenges so that they too can become Health Action Heroes like Mambo and Jazz.
Each session is 1 hour, with a maximum of 30 pupils. Visual resources will display and highlight key messages on healthy eating, exercise, smoking and sun safety.
Primary Health Action: Primary 4 - Primary 7
There are 2 sessions in this programme. You can book either or both for you school.
Primary Health Action: Be Healthy is an innovative and interactive exploratory workshop empowering young people to lead a healthier lifestyle through enhanced knowledge of the aspects of healthy living.

Secondary Health Action:
There are 2 programmes:
Your Body, Your Health: Healthy living (For 1st - 6th year)
An interactive session designed to give students knowledge of healthy lifestyle and habits to reduce their risk of cancer and other health conditions. The session includes information on the dangers of smoking, the impact of alcohol, importance of healthy eating, how to stay safe in the sun, benefits of physical activity and tips on stress management. It is designed with inclusive learning in mind and incorporates interactive activities that the class will take part in, and visual aids, such as pigs lungs to show the effects of smoking. Students and teachers will be provided with information to take home on the topics covered to support learning from the session.
Your Body, Your Health: Cancer Awareness (For 4th – 6th year only)
Can be delivered as a standalone session, but is designed to complement Your Body, Your Health: Healthy Living to further students’ knowledge. This session focuses on increasing knowledge and awareness of common cancers, while empowering young people to take control of their own health. During the session students will learn about the signs and symptoms of certain cancers, in relation to breast, cervical, testicular, skin and lung cancer, risks of developing cancer and how to self-examine. This session is also interactive and practical in nature, where students will have the opportunity to use self-examination models and take part in discussion and activities around all the topics. Knowing your own body, being confident and able to recognise changes increases the chances of early detection, which can save lives. Students and teachers will be provided with information to take home on the topics covered to support learning from the session.
