Gareth Kirk - Chief Executive (Non-officio member of the Council of Management)

Gareth, reporting to the Council of Management is responsible for the overall management of the charity. A Chartered Accountant by profession, prior to his appointed to Action Cancer his career spanned over 30 years in the Public and Private Sectors.




Geraldine Kerr - Head of Professional Services

Appointed June 2005

Geraldine has spent over 30 years in the caring and supporting professions. A qualified Social Worker, Geraldine has responsibility for the strategic development of services & managing our suite of professional services and interventions, ensuring that they are delivered efficiently, effectively and to the highest of professional standards. Geraldine is also an accredited coach and provides coaching to staff and for people affected by cancer.


Dougie King - Head of Fundraising and Communications

Appointed June 2005 

Dougie, having spent over 30 years working in the voluntary sector is one of the most respected and experienced fundraisers and marketers in the sector. Responsible for fundraising, communications, marketing, retail (shops) and relationships with Groups. Overall he and his team is tasked with generating income of circa 250k per month, originating and delivering a wide range of marketing and lobbying campaigns and ensuring that the Action Cancer “voice” is heard and articulated.


Arlene McGeown - Head of Finance and Administration

Appointed October 2008

Arlene is a Chartered Certified Accountant responsible for ensuring not only the integrity and safe guarding of our finances but also for ensuring that the Corporate Governance controls put in place by the Council of Management are being effectively operated. She is also responsible for all corporate administration, I.T. and H.R. issues.

Council of Management  

Mr Norman Carson  (Chairman) (Business Category Member) Appointed October 2011

Norman was originally appointed to Council in June 2009 but stood down in January 2010 to temporarily take up the position of the charity’s Chief Operating Officer, a position from which he retired in April 2011.  Co-opted back onto Council in June 2011 he was formally elected at the October 2011 AGM 201.  Appointed Chairman in June 2011 and annually re-appointed as Chairman in each subsequent January. Norman has wealth of business and professional experience gained whilst working for many years in a range of finance positions within the Northern Ireland Health Service from which he retired in 2006. He has an undoubted passion for the services, staff and volunteers of Action Cancer.

Mr Eddie Currie (Business Category Member) (Treasurer and Member of Audit Committee) Appointed October 2013

Eddie had over 30 years’ professional experience in corporate services, including transport and estate management, catering, domestic services, IT and Risk Management.

After a long career in local health and social services, Eddie is now retired from employment but continues to keep extremely busy through his voluntary activities with a Newtownards based charity for people with addictions and a local Food bank charity.

Married, he enjoys being a hands on grandparent.

Mrs Jane Adrain BAgr, MBA, MCIM (Business Category Member) (Member of the Audit and Membership Committees) Appointed October 2014

Jane spent the first 16 years of her career in the marketing departments of blue chip corporates (Nationwide Building Society, Merck & Co, Northern Bank) in the UK where her special interest was in marketing planning. Following that she worked for a time as a consultant in the Education sector in Northern Ireland, advising on the re-launch of a secure learning platform throughout the Northern Ireland Education and Library Boards.   More recently she has worked with various SMEs and start-up businesses helping them to identify their business needs and formulate business/marketing plans to take advantage of opportunities available to them. She has also been an Agri-Business Mentor with the Countryside Rural Partnership since 2012.

In 2012 Jane was appointed as a tutor for The Marketer’s Forum, delivering 3 modules of the CIM Professional Diploma - Marketing Planning Process (MPP), Managing Marketing (MM) and Project Management in Marketing (PMiM). Jane also tutors MPP and MM assignment students for the Oxford College of Marketing.

Jane has a particular interest in the charity sector and has worked with a number of charities, both as a mentor and as a trustee. Jane lives in Saintfield with her husband Mark and their 4 children. She is actively involved in her local church where she is a member of the Church Committee and a Trustee.  Her hobby is keeping goats.

Miss Ann Bowen (Medical Professional Category Member) (Secretary and Member of the Professional Services Committee)  Appointed October 2014

Ann studied pharmacy at QUB and following her pre-registration year in England work in Altnagelvin hospital and Muckamore Abbey hospital as a pharmacist. She then became pharmacy services manager at Purdysburn and Ards / Down hospitals. Following the formation of Trusts, she became the chief pharmacist for South and East Belfast Trust, the community side of North and West Belfast Trust.

She has also sat on the Eastern Board Drugs and Therapeutics committee, as a member, vice-chairman and as chairman and the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) including three years as vice-president and two years as president. During her time with the Council, she was also a member of the Pharmacy Practices Committee and the National Appeals Panel, responsible for awarding community pharmacy contracts.

Lawrence Fisher (Group Category Member - Whiteabbey Group) Appointed October 2015

Lawrence has been a member of the Whiteabbey Group for the past 10 years becoming involved through his wife Marion, he is currently Group Chairman. Lawrence has worked in the Department of Finance working in the Valuation Office and in the private sector working for Auctioneers in Dublin. In early 2019 he retired from the NI Housing Executive where he worked in the Private Sector Improvement division dealing with policy and procedures in connection with Private Sector Grants and Houses in Multiple Occupation.

Dr Gwyneth Hinds (Medical Professional Category) (Member of the Professional Services Committee) Appointed October 2015

Gwyneth worked as an Associate Specialist in the Breast Unit at Belfast City Hospital until her early retirement in September 2017. She has a special interest in hereditary breast cancer and in the support of women who carry BRCA mutations. Gwyneth is particularly passionate in promoting lifestyle change as a means of reducing the risk of cancer and is currently developing a number of initiatives and activities in support of this.

Valerie Heron (Group Category Member - Moneyreagh Group) Appointed October 2017

Valerie is the daughter of Sadie Strain, the Moneyreagh Group’s longest serving founding member. Valerie worked in the family business, “Strains of Comber”, for most of her life and is married to Dee Heron, a sheep farmer from Raffery who is also a member of the Moneyreagh Group. Both share a passion for local football. Valerie is treasurer for Killyleagh and a member of the IFA committee who organised the 2017 UEFA Women’s U19 Championship Finals.

Ella Tomlinson (Group Category Member - Antrim Group) Appointed October 2017

Ella has been a member of the Antrim Action Cancer Group for 34 years and is currently its joint Treasurer. Totally committed and dedicated to the Antrim Group, she particularly enjoys fundraising and especially quizzes. Ella is very family focussed, enjoying a lot of time with her Grandson Max and visiting family, planning trips in her caravan and as a member of her local Art Club.

Dr Stuart McIntosh

A fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (General Surgery) Stuart for 6 years until September 2015 was a Consultant Breast Surgeon with the BHSCT.  In October 2015 he was appointed an Honorary Consultant Breast Surgeon and a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Surgical Oncology at Queen’s University, Belfast.

An active clinical researcher, Stuart is currently the local lead for multiple national and global studies as well as acting Clinical Director of the Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network responsible for the strategic development and delivery of clinical cancer research across the region. Stuart is also currently the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Lead for breast cancer. This national leadership role carries the responsibility for developing a broad portfolio of clinical research studies in breast surgery and working with breast surgeons across the UK to increase engagement with recruitment to clinical trials.

Mr Clifford Coulter

A member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants since 1987, Clifford is currently Head Accountant at the HSCB with responsibility for the finances relating to special projects and programmes, formerly he had responsibility for Health and Social Care for the Elderly, Physical and Sensory Disability and Family and Child Care programmes.
