Donald leads the way with pedal power.

On Saturday 7th September, Donald Starritt, 59 from Crumlin, put his pedal power to the test by cycling from the shores of Lough Neagh to Strangford Lough to raise money for Action Cancer’s prevention, detection and support services.
Speaking of his challenge, Donald commented:
“I wanted to mark the occasion of turning 60 by completing a fitness challenge so I set myself the challenge of cycling 50-miles from the shores of Lough Neagh to Strangford Lough for Action Cancer.
“There’s not a family in Northern Ireland that hasn’t been touched by cancer in one way or another and Action Cancer offers a fantastic range of services to help families through such times. It is certainly a deserving cause and once which many people are familiar with.
“I am really grateful for the health that I have and thankful that I am physically able to take on a challenge like this and the fact that I could do it to help a great cause like Action Cancer is even better.”
With his challenge and charity selected Donald set about planning his route, training for his 50-mile challenge and fundraising.
“Initially, I found the notion of asking people to sponsor me challenging. I hadn’t done any fundraising previously so it was a big step out of my comfort zone. Happily it turned out to be a lot easier than I expected! I set up a Just Giving, sent a few text messages and emails around friends, family and colleagues; I provided a few updates on my training and that was sufficient to generate the funds.”
Donald raised a whopping £1, 110 in sponsorship which will go directly towards Action Cancer’s detection, prevention and support services which annually help to save and support 30,000 people across Northern Ireland.
“I think the key thing I’ve learned from the experience is to not be nervous about asking for help, whether that’s for help with fundraising or training advice it’s important to remember that you’re asking for the charity.”
“I really enjoyed the challenge and the support received from Action Cancer to get me event ready. Who knows this could be the start of a long and happy cycling hobby so watch this space!”
