Applications for the Schools Health Action Awards are now open!
13 March 2018
Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools are all invited to enter the 2018 Health Action Awards, part of Centra’s ‘Live Well’ initiative, as the leading convenience retailer teams up with Action Cancer for the 16th year of the Health Action Schools' Programme.
Schools, nurseries and colleges are all encouraged to enter the awards; which will be presented at a fun, interactive prize giving ceremony on June 5th in Lisburn Civic Centre. Judges are looking for those schools who are involved in health promotion; through providing healthy meal options in their cafeteria, promoting extra fruit and water in school, taking part in extra-curricular exercise programmes, or running cancer awareness initiatives.
There are Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards for nursery, primary and secondary schools up for grabs. A prize, to be spent on school equipment, will also be awarded to the highest scoring school in each of the previously known 5 Education and Library Boards. £100 will be awarded to the highest scoring nurseries and £200 for the top scoring primary schools and secondary schools.
Action Cancer’s unique Health Action programme has visited nurseries, schools and colleges more than 1,200 times since its launch 15 years ago. With more than 500,000 children and young people across Northern Ireland benefitting from the cancer prevention sessions, which include information about keeping fit and active, eating well, being safe in the sun and avoiding the dangers of smoking and alcohol.
Centra stores and Musgrave staff have raised over £1 million for the Health Action Programme and Centra Brand Manager, Jennifer Morton said: “It’s wonderful to know that we are empowering the next generation of children to take charge of their health and think smartly about their choices when it comes to food and exercise”
Action Cancer’s Health Improvement and Evaluation Manager, Caroline Hughes added: “Educating young people about how to make healthy choices, in a fun and interactive way is a vital part of Action Cancer’s Health Promotion work”
