staying safe this summer
There are two different types of sunlight; UVA which causes premature ageing and UVB which causes sunburn and skin cancer.
It is important to look at labelling for protection from both.
In order to be safe in the sun Action Cancer recommend the following actions:
Use high factor sunscreens (SPF 15+)
Apply the sun cream thickly and give it time to soak in
Re-apply sun cream frequently and whenever you have been in water
Wear protective clothing e.g. T-shirt, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
Stay in the shade
Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
Avoid sunbeds
Fake it!
It's also crucial that young children are protected from the sun as their skin is more sensitive.
Damage to the skin begins early with nearly 50% of lifetime sun exposure occurring by age of 18.
However skin damage and skin cancer rarely becomes evident until years later.
