facts on sun exposure and skin cancer
Everyday exposure to the sun results in cumulative skin damage from UV light, which can lead to skin cancer.
There are two types of skin cancer.
Malignant melanoma is the less common type but spreads more rapidly and is therefore quite dangerous.
There are nearly 7000 cases and over 1600 deaths in the UK every year.
Non-melanoma is the most common cancer in the UK with over 62,000 cases every year.
Everyone is at risk of skin cancer however, you are at greater risk if you:
have fair skin, freckles, light or red hair
sunburn easily
have blood relatives who have had skin cancer
spend a lot of time outdoors
