Each year around 10% of Action Cancer's budget is used to fund vital cancer research projects in local universities.

GRANT FOR RESEARCH

Action Cancer is a leading local charity which has been Saving Lives and Supporting People in Northern Ireland for over thirty years. Action Cancer proposes to award a Studentship grant for a cancer-related research project.

Research Studentship (Ref: S-2007)

The Research Studentship is for a three-year PhD project and Action Cancer will consider proposals from academic staff in the universities in Northern Ireland. Applications should confirm the suitability of the supervisor and host department/school for PhD training. The Studentship will comprise a maintenance grant, full-time fees and a contribution to running costs. Full details and an application form can be downloaded below. For further information, or if you need an application form posted or emailed to you, contact Teresa Scott either by telephone: 028 9080 3348 or email tscott@actioncancer.org. Completed applications forms should be returned by email to tscott@actioncancer.org no later than 4.00pm on Friday 6th April 2007. Late applications will not be considered.

Action Cancer especially welcomes applications for social science research projects related to cancer and its impact on individuals and/or families and/or communities since this is an area the charity wishes to develop.

The above cancer research programme is funded entirely by voluntary donations. In addition to research, all funds raised by the charity are used to provide early detection, cancer prevention and support services across Northern Ireland.

Action Cancer is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities and adheres to its code of practice

About Action Cancer's Cancer Research

It is part of Action Cancer’s role to press for better treatments for cancer patients and one of the best ways of doing this is helping doctors and scientists better understand how different cancers work and what might be useful in fighting them. This is one of the reasons Action Cancer actively supports local cancer researchers at Queen’s University, Belfast and the University of Ulster.

prostate

Among the projects receiving backing is one which may help reduce secondary cancers in prostate patients. An Action Cancer supported researcher is working on understanding the manner by which cancer cells migrate from the prostate to establish secondary cancers in other parts of the body.

This process of migration, known as metastasis, is one reason for the high mortality rate and low 5-year survival rates associated with prostate cancer.

oral

Dental researchers, supported by Action Cancer, are investigating the possibility that small proteins that are produced by the body’s white blood cells to fight infection, may also be effective against oral tumour cells.

cancer genetics

One of the most exciting projects Action Cancer has been involved in is the setting up of a provincewide Cancer Genetics initiative in conjunction with Belfast City Hospital. The service was launched at the end of August 2000. Our genes are the codes that make us what we are and scientists have discovered that some peoples genes make them more likely to develop cancer. Identifying these risk factors could allow for the prevention of cancer or early detection. In addition counselling will allow people to reduce or come to terms with their risk. The service will be based at Belfast City Hospital with clinics at 3 other Northern Ireland hospitals. For more information please contact us on 028 9080 3344.
