Why Weight?

Weight Management
The weight is over for a new you
Obesity is a major public health concern in Northern Ireland. Obesity occurs when weight gain gets to a point where it poses a serious threat to a persons health. Almost half of all men and more than one third of women in Northern Ireland are overweight with nearly a quarter of all men and women being classed as obese.
In response to this, Action Cancer has teamed up with Nutritional Therapist Jane McClenaghan of Vital Nutrition Ltd to develop a weight management pack. Preventing weight gain can help reduce the risk of many cancers. It is recommended that people establish habits of healthy eating and physical activity to prevent overweight and obesity. Those who are already overweight and obese are advised to avoid additional weight gain, and to lose weight through diet and exercise. Even a weight loss of only 5 to 10 percent of total weight can provide health benefits.

Why weight? 6 Week Programme
Here you will find all the tools you need to help you lose weight and feel healthier. Our Why Weight? pack is designed as a 3 month programme - not as a quick fix.
Action Cancer's health promotion team will support you through the first 6 weeks of the programme where each week will consist of a weekly weigh-in, an information session covering various topics, and a physical activity session. At weeks 1 and 6 body composition analysis is carried out, using professional TANITA scales, to measure body fat%, fat mass, muscle mass, total body water mass, bone mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR), and body mass index (BMI).
There will be continued support available through the programme by means of online support and email and text support by means of motivational messages and tips. There is an opportunity for followup sessions including body composition analysis at the end of the 13 weeks.
There are lots of healthy habits that you will adopt during the programme that will stay with you much longer, thus benefitting your long-term health. So throw out the scales, stop counting calories and welcome to a new, sustainable approach to weightloss. It's time to wave goodbye to bingo wings, muffin tops and flabby bellies and hello to a healthier, happier, slimmer you!
