Counselling for children and young people

Have you, or someone close to you been diagnosed with or died from cancer?

This can be a frightening and upsetting time but Action Cancer have people who will listen to any worries you have. An Action Cancer counsellor is someone who talks to and helps children and young people, over the age of five, who have been affected by cancer.

What can a counsellor do?

• Listen to you
• Explain what cancer is and how it might affect your family
• Help you understand what’s happening
• Let you say exactly how you’re feeling
• Talk about ways of coping with what’s happening

How will counselling work?

Usually you’ll meet with a counsellor for an hour each week, the number of times you meet depends on what’s right for you. In your first meeting you
and the counsellor will discuss what you’d like to talk about in sessions.
You can talk each week and also draw, use books and games in your sessions. You will need a parent or carer’s consent to come to counselling if you are under 16 years old. What you talk about in counselling is private, and your counsellor will explain this more when you meet them.

How do you get in touch with an Action Cancer Counsellor?

We work across different locations in Northern Ireland. You can also speak to a parent, carer or adult you trust and ask them to help you make an appointment.

If you, someone in your family or a close friend has been diagnosed with cancer or someone close to you has died after having cancer you can call 028 9080 3344 to find out more about counselling or to get an appointment.
