Complementary therapy

Action Cancer are pleased to offer a range of support services to those diagnosed with cancer as well as those more widely affected by cancer (e.g. family members, carers or those bereaved).

At Action Cancer, we have a team of complementary therapists who have received specialist training to work with people who have received a cancer diagnosis. Whether you have just been diagnosed or are receiving medical care (such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, pre- or post-operative surgery) we are happy to offer you complementary therapy treatments at Action Cancer, Belfast.

‘Complementary therapies’ refer to therapies that can be used alongside conventional health care and there is a diverse range of them. Therapies may be considered as self-care (e.g. meditation), as techniques (e.g. massage) or as interventions with a range of clinical applications (e.g. homeopathy).  At Action Cancer, all complementary therapies are used in addition to, rather than in place of, cancer treatments. The most widely used by patients with cancer are touch therapies (e.g. aromatherapy, reflexology and massage) and mind body interventions (e.g. relaxation, meditation and visualisation).

The therapies available at Action Cancer are:

  • Aromatherapy Massage
  • Reflexology & Gentle Foot Massage
  • Bach Flower Remedies Consultation
  • Touch Therapy
  • Guided Visualisation and Meditation
  • Therapeutic Touch
  • Relaxation Techniques

We often combine several therapies to meet individual needs and the complementary therapies we provide are appropriately modified to ensure suitability and safety, to support the individual needs of people with cancer.

We are also aware that cancer may also emotionally affect those close to the patient, therefore, we also offer complementary therapies to family members, carers, or those bereaved as a result of cancer.

You may receive of up to six one-hour therapy sessions free of charge (although voluntary donations are always greatly appreciated).

Additionally, over the past four years we have been evaluating our service, measuring quality of life of clients before and after accessing complementary therapy. Our findings show a significant increase in quality of life for many of our clients after accessing our services. (For more information on our evaluation contact our Research and Evaluation Officer, Caroline Hughes by email – chughes@actioncancer.org or phone – 02890803344)

During my chemotherapy last year Action Cancer offered me reflexology treatments which helped me relax and increase my feelings of overall well being. That time for me was just priceless.” (Patricia Kearns)
