Children & Young People Support Services
Action Cancer provides both complementary therapy and counselling to children and young people affected by cancer either directly or through a parent/guardian’s cancer diagnosis or death.
We also provide the following complementary therapies specially adapted for children/young people:
- Gentle massage/touch
- Relaxation techniques
- Bowen and Emmett Therapy
- Bach Flower Remedies
Complementary therapy can help reduce anxiety and stress, improve sleep patterns and aid relaxation. It can also teach coping skills to help deal with what’s happening. The therapist will discuss at the first session what therapies would be beneficial. Complementary therapy can be performed over light clothes. For children/young people under the age of 16 a parent/legal guardian must be present in the room during the session.
Action Cancer provides counselling to any child/young person over the age of 5 affected by cancer. Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a frightening and upsetting time for all concerned. For parents with a cancer diagnosis, we can help support you explain to your child what cancer is and provide an opportunity for them to talk about their feelings and how to cope with what is happening. For children/young people under the age of 16, written consent from a parent/legal guardian is necessary for counselling.
New Schools Programme
We have begun to offer a new group programme for children/young people impacted by cancer within the school setting. This aims to help support children/young people to deal with the worries and stress that follows a cancer diagnosis and provides them with tools and techniques that will help them manage their emotions and provide life skills.
