In 2010, Menarys and Tempest raised £35,000 for designated charity Action Cancer and this year the partnership continues! We have joined forces to target women and encourage them to be aware of health issues, whatever their age. It’s a women thing!
Health in your 30’s
Women in their 30’s usually lead a very busy lifestyle with competing demands including looking after a family and home as well as full or part time working. It is important to take time out for yourself and look after your health. Now is the time to establish, if you haven’t already, healthy habits which are applicable for all ages:
• If you smoke, seek support to stop; if you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
• Eat a healthy diet to reduce your risk for many cancers and heart disease and to help with weight management.
• Incorporate regular physical activity in your daily routine, making it a lifelong habit.
• Use a minimum sunscreen of SPF 15 to protect against ultraviolet rays that can age your skin and cause cancer.
• Be Breast Aware – check your breasts once a month looking for changes in shape or size as well as discharge, rash, pain or odd sensation. Should you notice any changes, go to your GP.
• Ensure you attend for cervical screenings.
Health in your 40’s
Your forties can be a transitional time, moving out of child bearing age with children getting older, yet it’s still likely to be busy juggling families, aging parents and work. Hopefully healthy habits developed in your 20’s and 30’s are maintained, but it’s never too late to start! Your metabolism may have slowed down so your low-fat diet, weight-bearing exercise and physical activity are as important as ever.
In addition to all of the points relevant in your thirties, you can now attend for breast screening at Action Cancer:
• Action Cancer’s breast screening service is available every two years for self referring women aged 40-49 and 70+. You can book your screening on line at www.actioncancer.org, or by calling 028 9080 3344.
Each screening takes just 20 minutes and is available at Action Cancer House or on our Big Bus mobile unit. Action Cancer is the only place where a woman in her forties can access a free breast screening free of charge. Should you have a symptom, go directly to your GP.
Health in your 50’s
Many people now consider their 50’s to be the ‘prime of life’. Enjoy those things that you may have put on hold while you built your career or reared your children. You may have more time to yourself which provides a lot of possibilities - Perhaps there is a new exercise routine you would like to try or opportunities to travel to sunnier climes.
Remember as you age, your skin becomes thinner, drier and more fragile. Take good care of your skin whether at home or abroad by using sunscreens, moisturising and drinking plenty of water.
It’s still important to follow the health tips listed for women in their 30’s - Regular self checks and screening is even more important as you grow older as cancer incidence increases with age. You should not be unduly worried but know what is normal for you – attend your screenings when called by the NHS and monitor any changes in your body, seeking GP advice if you have symptoms.
Top Tips Whatever Your Age:
Eat at least 5 portions of different fruit & vegetables per day; eat more fibre; eat less fat, salt and sugar; don’t smoke; keep active and take time to relax; moderate alcohol intake (max 21 units for men or 14 units for women per week); go to the doctor with persistent health worries; take care in the sun.
