What is the significance of a family history and breast cancer?

Women with close relatives diagnosed with breast cancer prior to the menopause may be more at risk, although it is important to bear in mind that only around 5% of breast cancers are family history related. By family history we mean- mother, sisters or daughters diagnosed with breast cancer- this is what experts call a 'first degree relative'. If you are concerned about a family history of breast cancer you should discuss this with your GP who can refer you to a specialist Family History clinic were experts can look at your individual circumstances and decide if you are at a higher risk that the general female population. if you are they can arrange regular surveillance for you, even if you are younger than the screening age. This can also involve referral to a geneticist if appropriate.
