New Cancer Services for Lurgan
03 March 2015
Leading local cancer charity Action Cancer is bringing its therapeutic support services to Lurgan.
Action Cancer in partnership with Mount Zion House (a member of the VERVE network of Health Living Centres) is setting up a new and free complementary therapy service for children and young people (aged 5+) and adults affected by cancer in Lurgan and the surrounding areas.
Any adult or child who has had a cancer diagnosis themselves or has been affected through a close relative’s diagnosis can avail of this free service. This service is supported by BBC Children in Need.
Complementary therapy can help reduce anxiety and stress, improve sleep patterns and aid relaxation. It can also teach coping skills to help deal with what’s happening.
Ruth Fleming, Service Development Manager at Action Cancer said, “The complementary therapies used are specially adapted for people affected by cancer. Equally so are the therapies offered to children and young people and include gentle massage (over clothing); reflexology; aromatherapy; relaxation techniques; and Bach Flower Remedies.”
Janice Bunting Chief Executive of Mount Zion House said, “We are delighted to be able to provide the facilities for Action Cancer to have a base in Lurgan to support local children and adults. Mount Zion House has the ethos of being ‘at the heart of the community’. Our venue is accessible and we offer a warm and friendly environment for those attending the centre. The addition of this new and innovative service to our already well established community hub is of significant value to those impacted by a cancer diagnosis.”
Lisa Follis, Craigavon Neighbourhood Renewal Health Co-Ordinator from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust added, “The Verve Network is all about promoting healthy communities and addressing local need and this service will complement the wide range of health and wellbeing programmes that are already available at Mount Zion House. It is a great asset to the area.”
To book a complementary therapy appointment for you or for your child, please ring Action Cancer on 028 9080 3344.
The service is officially being launched on Wednesday 11th March at Mount Zion House (3.15-4.15pm) and members of the public are welcome to attend to find out more about the support available. Please call 028 9080 3370 to register for this event.
