Big Challenge for Big Birthday

10 March 2016

Banbridge man Alan Forbes decided to celebrate turning 60 by setting himself a cycling challenge while fundraising for Action Cancer at the same time.

The challenge was to cycle 60 miles of mountain bike trails in 60 hours, climbing 6000ft at 6 mountain bike trails throughout Northern Ireland to raise money for Action Cancer. Alan and his son Daniel set off from Castlewellan Forest Park and finished by climbing Sleive Martin, Rostrevor two days later. Other routes along the way included Davagh Forest trails, and Big Wood, Warrenpoint.

Alan chose to support Action Cancer as he saw first-hand the effect of the charity’s support services. After Alan’s father passed away from cancer his mum found Action Cancer’s Complementary Therapy services a real help.

Action Cancer’s Arlene Creighton explains the impact of Alan’s fundraising, ‘Alan’s incredible total of £3,015 will enable Action Cancer to deliver 86 Complementary Therapy sessions. We are so grateful for his support, it means that other families and individuals affected by cancer can use our complementary therapy services.’

Alan expressed how grateful he was to everyone who supported him, ‘We received massive support from businesses and people in the local community, I was also touched by the generosity of complete strangers who donated when they heard what we were doing and that it was for Action Cancer. I would like to thank everyone who supported us in any way, from kind donations to fellow Mountain Bike enthusiasts who rode sections with us. I would particularly like to thank Darren Weir from Spinning Studio Banbridge for working on endurance training with me.’
