Action Cancer to host India Dalai Lama Trek Information Evening

13 May 2019

Action Cancer, Northern Ireland’s leading local cancer charity is calling on supporters across Northern Ireland to sign up to take on the Dalia Lama Trek, 1st – 11th October 2020, to raise funds for Action Cancer’s prevention, detection and support services.  Interested participants can pop along to Action Cancer House at 7.30pm on Wednesday 5th June to learn more about the awe-inspiring route which begins in the mystical town of Dharamsala in India, home to the Dalai Lama, and will see participants hiking for 5 days in the foothills of the majestic Himalaya’s.

The Information Evening provides a fantastic opportunity to hear directly from Global Adventure Challenge Representatives who have led several treks through India, and it also provides the opportunity to learn from past-Action Cancer Trekkers who can share their experience of fundraising and training for such challenges.

As well as being a physical challenge, the India Dalai Lama Trek promises awe-inspiring views, and an insight into the life of the local people. Immersed in the local culture trekkers will benefit from an authentic adventure unlike any other as they make their way to the Taj Mahal - one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

The funds raised by challenges such as the India Dalai Lama Trek go towards the delivery of Action Cancer’s cancer detection, prevention and support services which costs £4m annually to provide. The charity’s unique breast screening service is available to women aged 40 – 49 and over 70 who fall outside the NHS screening range (50-70) while the preventative M.O.T. Health Checks are available to anyone aged 16 or over. Action Cancer delivers an excellent Health Promotion programme providing education and awareness on how to minimise the risk of cancer through practical health and lifestyle choices as well as therapeutic support in the form of counselling and complementary therapy to those living with cancer or supporting a loved one with their diagnosis and this is available to both adults and children from age 5. These services are all available from Action Cancer House in Belfast and regionally in selected venues across the country or on the Big Bus which is supported by Supervalu and its independent retailers.

Action Cancer’s Treks & Activities Executive, Lynn Sanderson, commented,

Action Cancer is a local charity whose mission is to save lives and support local people through the provision of cancer awareness, prevention, detection and support services. We receive no government funding and so rely entirely on the generosity of the Northern Ireland public to fund these services. Whether you want to walk in support of a loved one or set yourself a new challenge we would love you to join Team Action Cancer for the 2020 India Dalai Lama Trek!

“The cost to register for this challenge is £200 per person and each participant is asked to raise £3,800. In real terms, this money would provide 47 mammograms for women in Northern Ireland aged 40-49 or 70 plus; it could deliver 152 MOT Health checks to anyone aged 16 plus or, it could afford 95 counselling sessions to help a family member work through the grief of losing a loved one or a patient cope with a cancer diagnosis.

“Our services are hugely important and offer vital support to those affected by cancer, whether directly or indirectly, at a time when they most need it. By registering for the India Dalai Lama Trek, participants can help Action Cancer to provide these life-saving services and therefore positively impact those affected by cancer.”

Each fundraiser will be fully supported throughout the challenge by Action Cancer’s Fundraising Team who are on hand to provide advice, motivation and support to ensure that each participant easily meets their fundraising target.
